Breaking Into Pharma

People routinely ask me about strategies for breaking into the pharmaceutical industry.
While a Fellowship makes sense for some candidates, it may not be feasible for
everyone. My career in pharma began with a transition from being a clinical pharmacist
to a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) role, which can be an appropriate path for those
with relevant experience.
If you’ve met the basic criteria for the role (PharmD, PhD, MD, DO, etc.) I have no doubt
that you possess many transferable skills! It is crucial to carefully examine the job
description and thoughtfully tailor your CV to demonstrate how your experience aligns
with the stated requirements. Avoid overstating your responsibilities, as discrepancies
will likely be identified during the interview process.
Key competencies for success in the pharmaceutical industry include interpreting
scientific evidence, presenting data objectively, active listening, and effective
communication.
In your opinion, which skills are most critical to highlight when pursuing opportunities in
the pharmaceutical industry?
