Navigating Difficult Conversations

How do you navigate a difficult relationship with someone you need to work with?

Most people avoid the conversation. Unfortunately, avoidance usually makes the problem bigger.

When emotions are running high, give yourself time to reset. Then approach the situation with a clear objective: improve the working relationship, not win an argument.

Focus on what you can control:

  • Stay calm and avoid reacting in the moment.

  • Address specific behaviors, not the person.

  • Keep the conversation focused on the work and desired outcomes.

  • Set clear expectations and boundaries for how you'll work together moving forward.

Not every conversation will go exactly as planned. The other person may not see the situation the way you do.

But if their behavior is affecting your ability to work effectively, it's better to address it directly than let frustration build over time.

You aren't responsible for someone else's emotional intelligence. You are responsible for how you respond.
