Future You Is Being Considered Today
Leadership begins succession planning early. By the time a role is posted, the decision is often already taking shape. If you want your name in that conversation, make sure leaders understand your career goals and see how you are building the skills to step confidently into the next opportunity. Make it easy for leadership to think of you for the role.
The question is not, “How do I sprint when an opportunity appears?” It is, “How do I build the right competencies now so I am ready when the opportunity comes?” Think of it as creating a two-year runway.
First, increase visibility so decision-makers can recognize your capabilities. Ask informed, thoughtful questions in meetings.
Second, build sponsorship so trusted voices can speak to your readiness. How are you networking across the organization and collaborating across departments?
Third, close capability gaps. What stretch assignment, relationship, or skill could you strengthen this quarter?
When you start laying the groundwork now, promotion becomes less about proving yourself at the last minute and more about showing you have been preparing for the opportunity all along.
What will you start this quarter?
