Asking the right questions to understand the deeper meaning of a response is

important. Consider this analogy shared by David Macarios during a recent

conversation about real world evidence during his session as an industry expert with the

Someone says they need to get to work faster so you decide to give them a Ferrari. It

has 800 hp and top speed of 200 mph so it is FAST! Easy peasy! But it doesn’t solve

their problem and the commute remains slow.

If you don’t understand the way they go to work (“patient journey”) and current mode of

transportation (how I’m addressing the challenge today), then you cannot be sure that

the Ferrari will address the challenge!

So if with further probing you learn that the path is hilly, gravelly, and extremely narrow

in through the forest…and they are currently using a mountain bike to get to work…that

is when you gain the insight that a Ferrari is the wrong solution.

Are you asking the right questions?

How do you get to the real issue behind the statement or question?

How do you understand how they are addressing the challenges today? (characterizing

unmet need)
